Not.a.sponge*: 100% Vegan & Natural Konjac Remedy... ... and Not A Sponge
To the untrained eye, the range of Konjac products from not.a.sponge* might well be mistaken for soufflés. An observation perhaps not too far from the truth. Softer than a normal loofah or an average sponge, a not.a.sponge* Konjac could rightfully be metaphorically-termed the Soufflé of Sponges. We vouch for this by being users ourselves.
We speak to Maggie and Jane, co-founders of not.a.sponge*, to find out more about the inspirations behind the brand.
Tell us everything and anything about not.a.sponge*.
We refer to each and every one of our Konjac products as our “little puff of love”. Each one of these is completely handcrafted. Our little puff of love has a durable structure and gently glides cross the skin to deliver a pure and simple experience – to wash, cleanse and exfoliate your skin all at once! This natural remedy allows you to clean your face using only water while stimulating growth of skin cells with better blood circulation as you massage it over your skin.
We want to share with you a natural remedy that is kind to your skin, the earth and your pocket!
Not.a.sponge* products are handcrafted using 100% Konjac vegetable. They are chemical-free, vegan and bio-degradable. Our Konjacs are suitable for everyone, even babies.
While a non-foaming cleanser can work equally well with your not.a.sponge*, we recommend using only water so as to keep it super natural, letting the nutrients from the little puff of love work to get your face and body squeaky clean. Less is more!
Pardon my ignorance, but tell me what exactly is Konjac?
Not.a. sponge* is made from pure Konjac vegetable. Konjac is an exotic & fibrous vegetable that can be found mainly within Asia’s subtropical to tropical climate. Predominantly harvested for food, the Japanese and other Asian cultures have been feasting on it for centuries as it is filled with loads of vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamins A, C, E, D, B1, B2, B6, B12, Zinc, Protein, Folic Acid and Iron but to name a few. Grown in volcanic rich soil, it consists of 97% Water and 3 % Glucomannan. We have found a group of artisans to meticulously handcraft our highly desirable not.a.sponge* from this super plant!

For the boys, we recommend Bamboo Charcoal due to its high absorption nature. The product is slightly alkaline in nature, and provides a gentle but potent cleansing regime. It is a really great way to introduce to those (especially teens!) with oily T-zones and black heads a simple but effective skin-health routine. It is also a great product for grown-up men, as they could use it after a shave to gently massage over skin to remove shaving cream/foam/oils residue.
Our In The Raw series is recommended for all skin types. It is really very gentle. If anything, we would recommend this for babies. This series effects an extremely gentle scrub on babies’ sensitive skin. Just a tip for new parents out there, the little string attached to the little puff of love can be put around your fingers for a better grip when bathing your little bundle of joy.
For those with extra sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, our Volcanic Power series is very popular as it provides extra gentle cleansing and exfoliation.
Could you share with us the production process of not.a.sponge* Konjacs?
Our little puffs of love are completely handmade. It takes up to 14 days to produce a not.a.sponge* Konjac. From its natural state, we create an artisanal product that becomes soft and fluffy when water is added to it. We use the freeze-dried method, ensuring that a not.a.sponge* Konjac takes less time to get wet as compared to an average sponge. This in turn reduces the amount of water used. An average sponge takes 3x the time to get wet as compared to not.a.sponge* Konjacs.
What is/are the advantage(s) of using your Konjac products to off-the-shelf sponges?
One such advantage relates to the freeze-dried method we have adopted. As mentioned, this ensures that minimal water would be required to wet our Konjacs before usage. Another advantage lies in our natural not.a.sponge* remedy underlying all our products. Our Konjacs are natural and we do not use any synthetic chemicals, in line with our belief that less is more. We’re aware of off-the-shelf sponges that claim they are, let’s say, green tea sponges, but are in fact infused with green food dye rather than green tea itself. We are very confident about our in-house recipe and production process in producing a superior ‘sponge’ that is both cleansing and moisturizing.
Which is your bestselling item? Why do you think this is so?
Honesty, they are all popular but if we have to point to one, we would have to say it is the In The Raw series. We would think it is due to its suitability for all skin types, including babies’.
We noticed that your products are of various shapes. Is this variation purely aesthetically-driven or do the differing shapes serve a practical function?
Our half-ball shaped face sponges and the 6-wave shaped body sponges are ergonomically-designed for easy handling and to ensure they do the job of cleansing effectively.
The heart sponge is largely aesthetically-driven, and tends to sell well during gifting seasons like Valentines, Mothers’ Day and Christmas.
